It should.

This a misconfiguration of your SMTP server, not a RT problem.

It highly depend on your SMTP software and rules. You should look at
relay configuration on it (does it have the IP of your RT server in
network relayed parameters (mynetworks in postfix for example)?, is
example.com a valid domain and if not, maybe you have some rules to
control domain validity on your smtp, ...)
