Dear Friend The RTI Act is a sufficiently powerful law. It is not a toothless law at all. It is precisely because it is not a toothless law that the politicians want it to be made toothless.
There are powerful sections within our bureaucracy that require this law to be in operation and effective.Many of us are dismayed to observe undeserving but pliable officers getting ahead. Our steel frame has been corroded from within and without. We are not getting the cooperation we expected from the citizens. Citizens are unfortunately being misled by the politicians again through their proxies. Decisions have already been taken at the highest levels to water down the RTI Act and actually render it as toothless in law as it is presently toothless in practice.. The intense discussion / debate on "Man of the year" at RTI-India potently demonstrates that the Freedom of Speech and Expression thrives at this unmoderated and uncensored group. Yes it is intensely painful to our many members who have only a casual interest in RTI to receive so many mails. To this end, a new RTI group is being formed of our existing members who are prepared to be active (not passive) in ensuring that the RTI Act does not become toothless.
