I also met with your question one year before. To solve it, I initiated a project at 
my college. But because of  limited time/financial investigation, I got only partial 
result by now and the project is by now almost suspended. But the idea is practically 
wonderful. It would be fine if this project can be continued within RTLinux world.

We use COMEDI for the hardware driver layer. So got support on wide range of IO-boards.

We chose a Host-Target platform. The Host-PC is Windows ActiveX based. The two are 
linked through TCP/IP.
