I assume that you got this error message when running /sbin/lilo.
This error message is a little, um..., misleading. You need to
copy the file /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/zImage to /boot,
not /usr/src/linux/vmlinux.
However, if your compressed kernel (zImage) is over 512 kB, you
need to use 'make bzimage', which makes a big compressed kernel.
This is because of a LILO (actually BIOS) limitation.
Even still, 1.6 MB is a little large for an uncompressed kernel.
