On the linux-emdedded mailing list, there was a discussion about
booting linux directly out from ROM on an AMD SC410 (elan) Microcontroller
some times ago.
AFAIR, there are patches to do so, but you may have a look
at the mailing list archive ... (don't know where it is ...)
... wait ... wait ... wait ... ok, i just searched in my
local archiv: ppl just only seemed to talk about it ...
The other way would be to use something like a DIMM-PC from (www.)jumptec(.de) .
you can get a 386sx16 with 2 MB RAM and 2 MB Flashdisk (DiscOnChip-driver
necessary), or a 486sx33 with 16MB RAM and 16 MB EIDE-Compatible Flashdisk
(no special dirver needed). Both are only 40mm by 68mm.
But as they behave like normal PCs (with their own BIOS), the booting
time would be much higher than when booting out of rom ...
