Not completely, and certainly not if you're building your own hardware. At
least, there is some overlap. (Or portability wouldn't be very interesting,
I guess...)

A lot better than Closed Source, but I'd have to study the eCos licence more
carefully before regarding it "good for the whole open source community".
Remember the Qt/GTK+ flamewar? Many still avoid KDE/Qt, even after Qt was
QPLed...

One of the first things that spring to mind is History. Remember what happened
when IBM got Windows application support into OS/2? Even though I doubt that
Cygnus has as evil intentions as a certain other company, it doesn't surprise me
that some people get nervous when a company comes in saying "Hey, we got this
cool API for your OS. It will make it easy to port applications accross
platforms!"

Personally, I believe system software should be Free. It's to important to
depend on a single company maintaining it and keeping it available. "It will
be maintained by us, or GPLed" licenses are quite OK as long as they're
waterproof. (QPL is a license of that kind, BTW.) I prefer plain (L)GPL for
most things, of course.
