Ouch... Looks like the system froze right when something was accessing the
disk, or something like that.

Depending on what Linux distro you're using, you probbly have either a bootable
installation CD or a floppy (or two) with a "rescue mode". After you have
booted up the system one way or another, from some other root filesystem, you
can try running fsck on the damaged root partition.

Unless this fixes the problem (you may have lost access right info, and even
files on the root partition), the easiest way is probably to reinstall the
packages where the damaged files came from. How this is done is distro
dependent, so I can't help much without knowing what you have. (And I'm only
experienced with Red Hat Linux, as far as installers and "rescue mode" is
concerned...)
