Hello all:
I am using a rtlinux-2.0.prepatched kernel for the Personal Computer
that I downloaded. I added the prepatched kernel to a Caldera OpenLinux
2.3 system and recompiled. I have been trying to overcome a problem with
the system console and virtual consoles.
When the system boots, I see the normal PC BIOS POST messages and
briefly see "lilo" at the bottom of the screen before the color Caldera
OpenLinux screen that serves as the system console appears. This screen
displays the work "Boot: _" initially and then the word boot is
overwritten by "Loading kernel...". The colors on this Caldera screen
then change shade and the screen begins "inching" upward and black
screen begins to appear at the bottom. No more messages.
After the system has booted and KDE has started, the graphics terminal
works fine. The virtual consoles (vcs) however are all messed up. They
have vertical lines, horizontal lines and colors, but nothing useful. If
I return to the graphical terminal and shut down, the screen switches to
junk much like the vcs and again, the screen begins to "inch" upward as
the system shuts down.
If I compile the kernel with "make zdisk" and boot that disk, I get the
system console messages just fine during boot. All the vcs kind of
work.. but not right. Anything that is on the left margin appears again
in the same line near the right margin. Some of the characters are
"strobing", some of the characters are missing, change when using the
backspace key etc.
My guess is that some of the early boot stuff that was installed when I
installed the Caldera distribution is changing the VGA mode or the
terminal mode (or something) that is not compatible with my new kernel.
Does anyone out there know how to defeat the Caldera color system
console stuff and just get a normal old fashioned system console? Or is
there a better solution?
Thanks
Wayne
