I'm one of the two maintainers of the fbdev subsystem. Are you using
fbcon and which driver are you using? What video card does your system
have?

If you are using fbdev that sounds like the driver draws the screen pixel
by pixel without using the accel engine. Especially at 32 bpp color depths
its really slow.
