I had selected the wrong driver, now I can load the right one as a module
and use rtnet. I still have some problems with rtifconfig: if I do
"rtifconfig rteth0 up 172.30.30.5 netmask 255.255.0.0" the answer is "ioctl:
Inappropriate ioctl for device". Whta does it mean? The ip address and
netmask I used are the ones I usually have with eth0..

Are you sure that the eepro100 is the correct driver for your hardware? 
Did you also check that the kernel you recompiled was installed 
correctly (common mistake I also often make)? Check, e.g., if "ifconfig 
-a" still shows some Ethernet device.
