Hello,
has somebody experience with RTnet and the NetSilicon ARM NS7520? (or another ARM)
Which minimum time slots could be reached?
So far, likely no one has tried RTnet on an ARM system (at least no one has reported it yet).
However, there would be very few lines to fix in configure.ac and rtnet_sys_rtai.h to make RTnet compile on this architecture, but the bigger problem is RTAI itself. There is still a bit confusion about the status of all the different RTAI ARM ports, so this is the first point you have to check.
If you have a working RTAI ARM version, making RTnet work as well would be no big deal - and we would support you the best we can! Do you already have such a working version? If yes, we would need every detail: kernel version/patches, RTAI version/patches, cross-tool chain.
Regarding the potential performance: This foremost depends on the efficiency of the network controller and its connection to the CPU and memory. PCI busmaster DMA or PCI-like DMA would help a lot, but we also successfully tested RTnet on an ELAN520 with a slow SMSC91111 controller: less than 300 us round trip time. I think this might be a dimension you may get on slow ARMs as well.
