RTnet is currently making significant steps forward towards the next major release. We have added a working implementation of the new TDMA protocol with flexible time slot assignment, node hot-plugging, and backup master support. Furthermore, RTnet can now be used with 2.6 kernels. We just uploaded rtnet-0.8.0-test1 which includes all new features.

The improvements required some code changes and reorderings, so we will need a longer test phase before the final release. Please take the chance to help us, grab this test version, and try to run it on your network. The project heavily depends on user feedback, especially as the potential combinations of software and hardware has increased again, making it much more costly for us to check all options.

Not all docs have been updated yet, but you should already find enough information in the README for basic tests. The startup script "rtnet" is working with the new TDMA by default, more complex setups can be created using a tdma.conf file of the following format:

master:
cycle <cycle_in_us>

# IP is assigned to the Slave
slave:
ip 1.2.3.4
mac AA:BB:CC:DD:EE:FF
slot <id> <offset_in_us> [<phasing>/<period> [size]]
slot ...

# Slave knows its own IP
slave:
ip 1.2.3.4
slot ...

# Slave does not use an IP
slave:
mac AA:BB:CC:DD:EE:FF
slot ...

Slot sizes are not yet enforced, and the backup master setup currently requires hand-crafted "tdmacfg" calls (that's the new configuration tool for TDMA). The TDMA protocol is fully supported by the latest Ethereal SVN and will be included in its upcoming release 0.10.8. For more detailed information about TDMA-V2 take a look at the TDMA.spec file and/or feel free to post your questions to the mailing list!

Old tdma-v1 is still included and can be invoked by the "rtnet-tdma-v1" script. The PowerPC network driver are not yet updated, but all others should run (not all have been tested, though).

RTnet also compiles now against the RTAI skin of Fusion 0.6.6 (current CVS), but we are still facing some timing and/or time conversion problems with this version. Philippe Gerum is informed and is also trying to find the reason. More news on this for sure soon.
