Just a short update on this specific scenario:
I reanimated the round-trip-time example in the SVN. It transmits
request packets to responder stations, collects the replies, and
displays all round-trip times. The rtt-* applications are designed to
run over POSIX conforming APIs. They have been tested so far with
Xenomai with and without RTnet loaded (both modes work!).
Maybe you want to have a look for your tests, or you even customise the
code.

Just to stay in theme, have you got (and has anyone got) some references (books, articles, links) on Real Time Operative Systems, Scheduling Algorithms, Real Time Scheduling Algorithms and Real Time Networks?
Anything on these can be for my thesis "didactic material": also anagrams, graffiti, alchemies.... :)
