I have the same problem, I found some articles about the "memory abuse" of
rubygems 1.2.0.
I tried several workarounds, then I discovered that the update_rubygems
command in rubygems-update 1.3.0 gem does not work in Windows environments
(neither in Cygwin with all the tools required).

So, I'll stick around with rails 2.0.2, which came bundled with NetBeans 6.1
and is used on the course's projects.
