I did it once, several months ago. In this case, I was replacing Apache 2.0 with 2.2. I don't recall anything peculiar about the experience, except that I had to rebuild everything in the world:-) I just started with the original configuration file, commented out what didn't work, built and rebuilt until there was nothing commented out.
