Despite what one might first assume from the group title, this group is for the discussion of the Prototype and Scriptaculous Javascript libraries (which spun off from rails). It is not a Ruby help group.
.. while I'm not totally familiar with Ruby, it appears that even if the flash values are being set in your if statement, they are being overwritten in the next one.
