I just noticed your post. I made a post today that you may find quite

My local configuration is similar to yours. I've been with BlueHost for 
quite some time and generally I am happy with them--but not for Rails.

I'm a newbie so you by all means, consider the source for anything I 
say.

I am using Sun's VirtualBox for a lot of my Ruby and Rails learning. But 
I no longer start projects that I think I might want to keep.

I found porting to other servers quite challenging at times, so I 
wouldn't recommend that approach.

Read my other post and if you have questions, I'm happy offer what 
little help I can from my very humble level.
