Think of it this way, you've stepped into the middle of a new culture with a strong tradition and history. There are unwritten and abstract rules unknown to you. It may seem perfectly reasonable to, for example, extend your left hand to someone in greeting. This may, in certain cultures, invoke a very different response than you might expect.
