How I think it should work is that there should be some "generic" 
version in the ``tools'' repo, out of which specific versions are built. 
  I can see at least two axis for variation: component set and 
configuration parameters (e.g. IP address and mounts, normally handled 
by rc.d).  Not sure how to handle either, yet, but can't be rocket science.
