reason, and I prefer not to thrash on decisions *too* much, it's just
wasted effort beyond a point.
I don't remember the reason exactly. I thought there was a syntactic
collision somewhere down in the pattern syntax. But I can't recall
exactly what it is.

(there's also the minimalism argument; but that's a weak one I could go
either way on)
