I completely agree, and rewriting the tutorial specifically is the
subject of #9874. We want to put a lot more effort into documentation
for Rust 1.0 and are in fact actively looking for an amazing technical
writer for this purpose. If anybody with a background in technical
writing is passionate about this topic I'd love to hear from you privately.
