oh dear - i should point out that the terminal renders with the
correct font, but the popup menu is causing the same error message now
about a missing font.  Why is this?  i tried adding:

URxvt.popup.font: 8x13

and re-running xrdb < ~/.Xdefaults

and loading a new urxvt - same error message.

Sorry about that missing info!
