Follow the lead and provide a correct fontset.

Agreed. Still, fixing your config would likely not make this issue an
issue.

Somewhere you (or somebody else!) have specified an unloadable font.

You didn't mention where you got your binary from - distribution maintainers
often break urxvt in interetsing ways, so if you got your binary via a
distribution (this might include config files from such a package), then this
is a good place to look. debian/ubuntu are the prime offenders, but other
distributions are not better.

The error message really does mean that the first font in the font list
cannot be loaded.

That the printf works likely indicates that some other config file is
there and overrides your font.
