You need to use a font suitable for terminal usage.

By using a proper font - terminals can only display single-width and
double-width characters, if the font you choose is not a cell font then
you inevitably get extra spacing as it doesn't quite fit.

You could also play around with a stretching matrix and make the
characters wider - not sure how well that will look.
