I'm also seeing this strange spacing problem - curiously on Fedora-8 but not on gentoo. There appears to be something upsetting urxvt on Fedora - I'm using the Monospace font which works just fine with gnome-terminal, konsole and mrxvt. I have no idea what it might be - my .fonts.conf file is inoccuous enough and I haven't fiddled with /etc/fonts.d/*
BTW - The added bonus with mrxvt is that Shift-KP_ADD and Shift-KP_Subtract allow the font to be tweaked up and down in size - just like rxvt but smoother 'cos it's using a ttf. If you can live without unicode, mrxvt might be the way to go.
