Well, I'm not sure I agree, but I think we understand each
other's point in any case.

Well, you are certainly right here.  However is it truly
necessary to maintain the wider font width in order for this to
remain the case, or are you simply making a general point?

Actually xterm with xft fonts is the worst of the lot!  It's
unusably slow over remote X, which is how I work all the time.
urxvt does by far the best in this case.  (Thanks!)
