It worked fine with the one inch separation as you suggested. Put some blocks on the end corners to support the folded half. I used a 1X6 board across both ends with some 1/4 inch bolts to hold the folded unit together. Folding the tops together protects them for traveling and the shorter package is easier to handle - heavy but easier. I used a two-wheel dolly to haul mine. Let us know how it works. I have tried to come up with something similar but the size needed for even a 24 inch radius has stopped me every time.
