Man -- are the responses pouring in. Lotsa guesses, but no one has even
come close yet. However, a couple of fellas did point out something
that I need to clarify. The prototypically correct answer that I will
share (eventually) only applies to #4449 which went from Portland,
Oregon to New Orleans (map southbound regardless of SP terminology and
semantics) and return. Thus, Mr. Sebastion's eBay loco, which has a
different number, will not necessarily share the answer to be provided.
So, for purposes of this real RR test, let's assume that Ron's eBay
GS-4 is #4449. Other than that minor change, the question posed remains
the same: what is the difference in paint scheme between the northbound
and southbound Daylight GS-4?

Just so everyone can compete on a level playing field, here is what is
known so far:

1. Paint scheme change has nothing to do with running on SP tracks or
non-SP tracks.
2. Paint scheme change probably only applies to #4449.
3. Paint scheme change is not a number change.
4. Paint scheme change has nothing to do with eastbound or westbound
running.
5. Paint scheme change has nothing to do with the
fireball/feather/headress (or whatever) emblem at the front end of the
decorative panel along the running boards.
6. Paint scheme change probably occurred only on the one trip from
Portland to New Orleans and return.
7. Paint scheme change has nothing to do with the train indicator
boards and/or the inclusion/exclusion of the "X" preceding the train
number.
8. Paint scheme change has nothing to do with the weather.
9. This is a true story told to me by a fellow who was there and saw it
in person. At least I believe it to be true. But I did not see it
myself. At least one custom painter agrees with the story as it was
related to me. My GS-4 has the northbound paint scheme which is
different from the paint scheme on Mr. Sebastion's GS-4.
10. Paint scheme change does involve REAL paint and is easily visible
from a distance of 30 feet -- perhaps farther. But ya gotta be looking
at the right place on the loco.

Now that all the easy ideas have been submitted, let's have a few more
thoughts. "S"cratch those heads!

Cheers....Ed L.
