Ed & List:

It sure would be fun to see these replies that are pouring in.

Ed, I think I have already correctly answered the question. Are you
not referring to the story where Doyle McCormick, engineer &
caretaker of the 4449, learned that he left off the SP lettering gray
pinstripe along the boiler next to the footboard?

IIRC, McCormick had just painted 4449 back into Daylight colors
(after Freedom Train duties). When he arrived at his location (New
Orleans?), he was informed that the locomotive was missing the
pinstripe and shown photographic proof. Apparently, McCormick's
photo's of 4449, which were taken from the ground did not show the
pinstripe which was hidden by footboard. The photos shown to him
were taken from an angle above the footbaord and clearly showed the
stripe.

Upon seeing the mistake, McCormick went immediately out and bought
some gray paint and painted the pinstripe on 4449 before he would
bring her home to Portland.

Am I right? Oh well, even if wrong - it's a neat story to share. Of
course we are probably boring all the pennsy fans. <VBG>
