Bud you are so right. Even at the 10 mph yard speed, things go slow. I was up in the tower at Sparks a while back and watching the crew switch. I new the engineer wasn't a speed demon. He was doing yard speed, and it seemed to be so slow. I told the yard master that we don't go slow to avoid doing the work, but obeying the rules meant 10 mph or slower. I can see his point of view, but having run yard engines for 15 years now I know speed in the yard doesn't pay off. Like you said, "the big boys have derailments too." They just seem to happen in slow motion compared to the ones on the model railroads. Of course we can't switch on the models like we do on the prototype. We used to kick cars in Stockton, and that wasn't slow switching. Here in Sparks, we pin them off and a crawl. A 1% grade in the yard means that we don't roll them too far either. I like your advice, get down at eye level and watch the trains roll by at what you think is a slow speed.
