and he notes -

Dick, you got me curious - I checked my own library and found a drawing of
a Reading Pacific in MR "Steam Locomotives" Vol 1, not the Atlantic. So
much for my once sharp memory!

There is a site with photos of the 4-4-4 as built -

Scroll down to that wheel arrangement.

One photo appears on this page of the loco as an Atlantic - (scroll down to
No. 350):

Only four of them were constructed at Reading's shops in 1915 as 4-4-4s to
provide stability at high speeds. However the experiment was a failure and
all were converted to Atlantics within a year. Except for the Cole (or
Hodges, I forget which is which) trailing truck and removal of the extended
ash pan necessitated by the four wheel trailing truck, the 4-4-2 was
identical. Not much was added over the years, power reverse, air tanks and
cooling coils which meant raising the running boards, etc.

It's interesting that Gilbert selected such an obscure locomotive for their
prewar "3/16" 0 Gauge" American Flyer line. By the time it was introduced
in S Gauge after WWII, the prototype locos were already withdrawn from
service, but the model was sold for another 15 years!

Plans for the locomotives apparently do not exist but the RDG 4-6-2 in the
"Steam Locomotive" plan book is similar to the in shape to the Atlantic
boiler, firebox, cab, front end, pilot and trailing trucks and placement of
appliances so a credible drawing could be made with one less driver and a
shorter boiler. If I ever get my scanner running again, I might give it a
try. Of course, time permitting too!

The poll results are in....... To REPLY to the list, use REPLY ALL, to reply
to the sender, use REPLY. I do NOT know if this works on all e-mail software,
but it works on some of the most common ones.
