Best option is almost as simple: mgdecals.com will run any of their decals in S scale. 1st time, they have a very nominal set-up charge. Maybe $15 extra. Will run them off one at a time - so no 500 minimum like many. They already have a lot of the northeast roads....including much for the Maine Central. And if they don't have it, they just might do it for you.
I look at it that I am building a layout. I need to do a lot of stuff, but learning to make my own decals is definitely not one of them. THere are so many hobbies within the hobby that you have to pick which ones you want to do and which you don't. Reducing digitized artwork is one thing.....results from simply reducing analog art may be less reliable. Just my opinion. And for nearly the same money, perhaps you could have a 1st class job. Might also check the yahoo decal list. There are lots of folks who will do this work for you there. And of course there's Microscale - with whom I'm working to do Rutland decals in S scale.
