Based on the replies to my inquiry, it sounded like my AM K4 problem was unique to me. So I went back and examined the tender wheels. They were still a little crusted so I pulled them out from the truck frames and proceeded to rub the finish off of those buggers. Once I got down to bare metal I put them back and tried them out. The engine ran much better. In fact it ran great. What ever the finish is on the wheels it is conductive but I doubt it conducts better then bare metal.
