Well, it is nearly 7:am here on the EAST coast... and though I am wondering
what in the world you're doing up so early out there in the Pacific time
zone and how you can possibly be thinking so clearly at such hours, I must
admit that your assessment hits a chord with me. Good to know that someone
can think clearly at such hours of the day... personally, I'd still be in a
coma. But in all seriousness, what you described is the very same thing
that has caused me many times to go so far as to consider throwing in the
towel and leave the hobby completely. I don't think I'll ever be a John
Allen or a George Sellios, no matter how badly I want to be. But does this
mean that my desire for prototypical accuracy and photogenic realism has
killed my enjoyment of the hobby? Though I must say that I have never and
would never play with "TOY" trains, I must admit that it would seem that my
enjoyment has taken a back seat to my desire for higher quality.

Subject: [S-Scale Modeling] Random thoughts

>
> Hi Group,
>
> It's early in the morning here in California, and I've just come into the
house from the garage where my layout is located. Lately I've been wondering
why progress on the layout has begun to diminished. It seems as though I'm
bogged down compared to the other layouts that I've tried to build. Do I
have too many projects? Do I have too much time on my hands since I've
retired? (perish that thought!!) Why am I not accomplishing as much as I
used to? After giving this much thought, I think that I might have the
answer. The reason that I'm putting my thoughts here is because there may be
other beginners ( amateurs, novices ) that have the same problem. Here's my
answer. Since I have become a member of BASS ( Bay Area S Scalers ), I have
seen some extraordinary layouts. They have all been worthy of model railroad
articles, and none of these layouts are club layouts! They're all home
layouts ( if you can call Arden's a "home" layout ) :>)... The point is
these layouts can be easily
> intimidating, and can make one feel that his/her efforts are crude in
comparison. This causes one to continue working on the same projects over
and over in an attempt to make them "perfect". The result is projects are
never finished. This was never a problem when the only examples were the
ones seen in model magazines. I now realize that the solution is simple.
Build your layout to the best of your ability and don't try to compare or
compete. Try to improve, but above all, HAVE FUN !!!
> Now that I've worked that out, back to the layout and progress. Just
random thoughts at almost 3:00am pacific time........
