Genlemen, since Bill Lane blew my cover, (just kidding,) I am the one
to blame for the presence of the high hood conversation. Myself and
my painter, not an s guager, built two high hood GP 35's out of
American Models low nose GP35's. You can get them from Tom Hawley.
The short nose was modified with a little styrene, glue, and a
knife? What is all the fuss? (just kidding). These particular
modeled engines were on the W&LE, one painted in the DRG&W colors and
one painted in the old Southern colors that W&LE just painted out the
old name and painted in their name.
If you were at Cleveland NASG convention a few years ago, these
real engines were running around Cleveland with gondolas loaded with
scrap steel pulling their little hearts out with 3 geeps on the front
and two in the rear. I thought that would be a neat train and
engines to model. Also, Bob Yankee lives on the west end of the W&LE
in Ohio. He models that rr, N&W and NS. I got all these ideas from
him, his layout, plus was able to see the real stuff in 1 to 1 scale
at the same time.
Correct me if I am wrong. When Overland ran the special unit runs
for example high hood GP's (38-2's), HH SD's, HH SD b units, they
did 10 of each. My guess is that there are 10 of each vs 20 of each,
special runs, therefore, less than you think.
My hair has more gray in it than Loizeaux, so he may not be the
wiser. (just kidding,Ed L.) You can have the prize. You need to
leave those NYC guys alone. There are more on this site than you
think.
Donald Mac, sorry I didn't get back to you sooner, this discussion
grew too quickly in only a few days, while I was at the show in Md.
over the weekend, gathering more info for you. Will fill you in
later. Ted Larson, moderator, I know this is longer than you want
but someone had to settle these hens down. thanks Jerry Smith
Arnold, Md.
