Hi group, It has been interesting to follow this thread. I could easily see a person (including me) switching to 2 rail O, or actually P48, if he had the space. Having been S for about two years now (after more years than I care to think in HO and dabbling in O), I am beginning to form a few generalizations that apply to my situation:
Freight cars are in pretty good supply, though I must agree with Dave Branum that it is a little frustrating to try to put together a unit train of specific reefers or hoppers, for instance. Diesel locos are a mixed bag. The SHS F units are sweet, and the announced E7 is eagerly awaited. First generation hood units are in short supply. Cabooses requite scratchbuilding unless you happen to model one of a very few big popular railroads. Passenger equipment is an almost insurmountable hurdle. The reissued Pullmans are a step in the right direction, but to really put together a passenger fleet is nearly impossible, especially if you want scale streamliners (again with the exception of the upcoming NYC Budd cars form Kaslo). And the big one, which may be the straw that breaks this camel's back--steam power is essentially a lost cause. Not that I don't understand a manufacturer's reluctance to produce units that only a small lunatic fringe group would want, but my chosen modeling subject, Southern Railway, used almost every USRA steamer ever produced. Seems to me that a "standard issue" steam locomotive, such as the USRA heavy mike should be able to find a constituency. I have to admit that I'm continuing to collect HO as a fallback position, much as I love to see the S scale trains run.
