I guess my view is that if one is in the hobby only for accumulation, S is 
probably the wrong place to be. But if any of a dozen other reasons are your 
main motivation, than S clearly is the right place to be.

I personally have more S rolling stock than I can get assembled and onto the 
track, and more than I need to equip a reasonable size layout. 

Last winter I suddenly decided I needed stock cars, because I had read a neat 
thread on the Pennsy newsgroup about what stock car roadnames appeared on the 
Pennsy. In a few months I had all the stock cars I needed off of eBay. 

I see reefers on eBay all the time.

Availability, like beauty and scale fidelity, is in the eye of the beholder.
