Hi Lance-

I need to get back to this project and finish painting & decaling it but it
is a nice kit to build up.

Trainstuff kits date from the mid 80's. This particular car, a Berwick double
plug, excess height, 60' car, looks very impressive & really sticks out among
a typical mix of freight cars.

The X-panel top, sine-wave ends and waffle sides are cast polyurethane. These
cast parts are brittle but are very workable with sandpaper and files for
smoothing edges. I used Zap CA for assembly.

Currently produced resin kits typically have one-piece bodies rather than
separate cast pieces making them easier to build.

See http://www.railyardmodels.com/pages/901653/index.htm for a nice HO Thrall
Penn Central X79 60' double plug kit.

The underframe components of the Trainstuff kit are wood but I replaced them
with styrene. Other parts -- ladders, brake gear -- are cast metal; these,
too, can be upgraded if desired.

Don Thompson, originator of the Trainstuff line, recently told me a bit more
about these kits -- see below. For some pics of other Trainstuff kits, see
http://www.nasg.org/databases/freight_cars.php and search for "[EMAIL PROTECTED]
Trainstuff" as a manufacturer.

See http://crcyc.railfan.net/crrs/box/boxb63b.html for prototype info. There
also is a nice pic in the Morning Sun pub "Conrail Color Guide to Freight
Equipment Volume 1: 1976-1987".

Dear Stan,

Our friend Stan Stokrocki made the patterns for these wonderful kits.
The Conrail decals were made by Bob Ristow. I
think we made about 100 of these.

Subject: [S-Scale Modeling] Trainstuff waffle-side boxcar kit

The February Dispatch introduced us to Stan Furmanak, and showed two
photographs of a boxcar he had build. The kit was said to have been made from
a Trainstuff kit. I would like to learn more about these kits--maybe purchase
one if there is one out there that remains unbuilt.

Can anyone tell us about them?
How do they go together?
What is the prototype?
Does anyone have they would part with?

Thanks,

Lance McCold
