It is correct with DCC that neither motor lead wire should be 
electrically connected directly to either rail at any time.  Both motor 
leads should go directly to the DCC decoder.  If the frame is 
electrically connected to either rail, then both motor wires must not 
be connected to the frame.  Both motor wires should go directly to the 
DCC decoder.  For 8-wheel pickup, the most common method is to use 
wheel wipers which are insulated from the frame.  Insulation can be 
achieved with tape, nylon screws, thin pieces of printed circuit 
boards, caulk, etc.  The DCC will absolutely not work if either motor 
wire is connected directly to either rail.  These comments apply to any 
locomotive and are not specifically related to the AM TrainMaster.
