Jim: The current AAR interchange rules limit a car to 40 years if it was built prior to 1974 and 50 years for cars built after that date. Car owners also have the option of doing what is called a "Rule 88" rebuild on the pre 1974 cars. When this is done then they qualify for the extra 10 years. Interestingly, prior to some time in the 70's, I believe it was 1974, cars up to 50 years old could be interchanged.
