Earl.........Everything is possible! It is only a matter of time and
money and your tenacity. Any loco where both motor terminals can be
electrically isolated from both rails can be powered with DCC. Makes
no difference if the motor is an AC or DC motor. With an AC motor,
such as classic Lionel, you will need access to the field windings
separately from the armature windings. But it can be done. In those
few cases where the motor terminals cannot be isolated from the
rails, the problem can usually be solved with a bit of creative
machining and/or insulating tape or some other technique in order to
obtain the needed insulation. If that is not possible, which is
extremely rare, then more creative solutions need to be invented. In
extreme cases, perhaps changing the motor to something else will make
the difference.

I do not own any Lionel locomotives. As a matter of fact, all of the
above information is theoretical since I have never installed a
decoder in a mass-produced plastic RTR loco at all. But have fun.
It is a blast!
