Hi Ed, You guessed correctly, TMCC and railsounds are a very large
package, it won't even fit in some O scale locos.
For O scale TMCC has a cost advantage because you can get so many
locos with it already installed for about $50 more than the same loco
with no sound. The 180 watt AC power supplies are also much cheaper
than the 10 amp DC power packs needed for DCC, the TMCC command base
and radio throttle are also very inexpensive(about $150 bucks compared
to a $500 DCC setup).
For S scale a lot of the cost advantage is lost however. S scale
locos don't need such heavy power packs so you can use a cheaper 5 amp
DCC system and most S scale locos don't come with factory TMCC, if you
have to buy the TMCc parts and install it yourself it costs just as
much as DCC and soundtraxx so there's not advantage there.
Although I do use TMCC and railsounds on my O scale layout I plan
to use DCC and sountraxx for my future S scale locos. Since SHS is
apparently coming out with a tsunami equipped switcher soon I'll
probably start there....dave
