Tom & List,

The first batch (about 200 cars) of F39 did not have a fold down 5th wheel
like is shown on my model. They had a very idiotic and labor intensive
system with 4 jack posts that jacked the trailer up completely, and then the
trailers had to be chained in 100 different directions.

They were also loaded "circus style".
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/billlane/F39_Loading_Yard.jpg All of the
trailers would have to face the same direction.

The BTS model is portraying the cars a little later in life with the fold
down 5th wheel. I did not assemble this model. My friend Gus did and I am
sure he followed the assembly instructions. He is VERY knowledgeable about
the F39 as seen here with some of his cars.
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/billlane/Gus_F39.jpg My model is sort of a
cross between the jack post era and the fold down 5th wheel. Gus put the tie
down loops on the deck like on the early F39, but this interfered with the
proper placement of the fold down 5th wheel. Also, the reason for using the
fold down 5th wheel on a model should be obvious. It is the easiest way to
put a trailer on the car without hours of simulating the jack post era and
tie down chains.

BTW according to the Slobbering Pennsy Freak Gurus, there are no dashes in
PRR car classes.

Thank You,
Bill Lane
