Not to flog the already dead horse, but the fact that you can walk 
into the local hobby shop and buy a turnout in HO, but few of us are 
lucky enough to be able to buy ANYTHING in S from our local shop is 
the real issue. I'm not sure the powered turnout itself is a big 
issue. How many layouts do you see in any hobby publication 
using "snap track" components?

We can buy Shinohara turnouts from 'S'cenery Unlimited (but only No. 
6, IIRC) and Tomalco has a nice line with laser cut instead of cast 
plastic ties. It is still a far cry from the avialability of HO 
track products.
