Hi all,
In all the discussions I've read on this list regarding rail heights
and the comparable scale model rail, I haven't seen anyone mention rail
head "width". I say this because different manufacturer's rail is rolled
to different specs, one's code 100 has such a wide railhead that the
overall profile resembles an "I" beam. Same goes for code 125, some of
which is made for O scale use and has a head too wide for a scale like
appearance in S. I believe, but I may be wrong, that the old code 126
rail from my early days in S had a very scale width head whereas the 125
looked awful in comparison.
The code 115 rail someone mentioned is the closest to 132 lb
mainline rail, but, I seriously ask, can anyone of us aging baby
boomers discern a visual difference of + .010" in rail height (to code
125) or even - .015" ( to code 100)? I doubt it!
I've seen some phenominal layouts in HO using the "oversized" code
100 but having the rail sides meticulously painted the weathererd brown,
thus disguising the additional inches in height.
I guess its all a matter of personal tastes and finances.
