I think that this issue has never been commented on until now, after
the rules have been in use for years. Here's some partial background
information. The obvious reason for requesting signatures is to
identify who is making what comments. Way back when I was first asked
to help with this list, I helped edit the rules, but I don't recall
discussing whether to put a signature on the rules, and it is so long
ago that I don't remember the details of who did what. I suspect that
it never occurred to anybody that there might be a question regarding
who sent the rules. They are from the list owner / moderators, via an
automatic feature in Yahoo. An e-mail address for the owner is
provided by Yahoo on the group's front page.

The list rules have changed only a little from what I was given when I
started helping moderate the list. From time to time, people write
suggesting that the rules are too loose or too tight. As many of you
have probably experienced, it is very difficult to write rules that
satisfy everybody. The list originator set up rules that were designed
for the "large middle ground". The desire is for "short and easy"
general rules rather than complicated very specific rules.

'twould be good for all of us to do. There obviously are some people
that I know by e-mail address, first name, or first name and initial,
but most people I don't know without a full name. This is all the more
true for newcomers. To make it easy, many e-mail programs have an
option to "always send signature". Mine is set this way. If a note
from me shows up without my signature, blame my computer! 8<)
