Dear John,
Ah, the good old days. I remember the converstation in the early
80s with Ron Bashista about this very topic. He had come out this a
state of the art FP7 in S scale (hey, scale only in those days!!!) and
wanted to expand into the freight car market. The problem was the
details. Our Chinese builder was still a decade away from helping all
of us make the leap to detailed RTR equipment so extra added detail
would be cost prohibited. The very important question among those who
were helping Ron was regarding cast on hand grabs. I think all of us S
scale modelers had spent some time grinding these off of AF shells and
had no interest in grinding them off of our new American Model Boxcar.
My suggestions was to add the hand grab mounts so that the hand grabs
holes could easily be spotted and the wire added. So in my opinion, Ron
correctly left the cast on hand grabs off of his model.
Re: The choice of prototype for the American Models combine please
don't blame Ron. My partner and I used home equity loans to finance
that project, so I felt the decision on the prototype was ours (or I
guess mine). The combine might not warm your heart, but to CNJ fans it
makes a lot of sense. If you would like to see a different combine, I
am sure there is a bank loan officer somewhere who would be real happy
to talk.
Best regards,
Don
