I realize this list is not an S Scale historical society, but, as one last look
at where we came from, here's a short item, verbatim, that I recently
discovered in The Model Railroader volume 2, no. 4 -- April 1935, page 91.
"Speaking of gauges there is now talk in England, where No. 1 gauge of 1 3/4"
is popular, of H1 gauge, or half No. 1. This would be 7/8" gauge. What a list
of gauges we are accumulating! Soon one can pick most any gauge to the nearest
1/8", and build to whatever size best suits. But, we wonder what will happen
to the manufacturers' stock lists and to the prices of parts. And, if there
are to be 'steen different gauges and scales, I will [sic] be able to bring my
rolling stock and locos over to your road and run them? Better, it seems to
us, if we work toward fewer and more used gauges than toward more complication."
