I think that one thing that is being forgotten here is the creation of
a new hobby which directly impacts traditional model railroading. By
this I mean train simulations like MSTS (sometimes know as V scale).
For people who are/were only in the hobby to drive trains and weren't
interested in model making or collecting as an activity this must be a
big draw. The emphasis in MR (and the American model RR scene in
general) on operation rather than modelling is surely one of the
reasons that they have shot themselves in the foot. Now you don't have
to buy models to drive trains.
