Hello Chuck,

Having read your request and the answers of others; I'm offering these
bits:

  1. The age question is legitimate; however, I've seen eight-year-olds operate
live steam locomotives (1.5" scale) with the best of 'em while men many decades
their senior couldn't stay out of trouble. You have to be the judge.

  2. If you decide to let him operate, try these ideas:

          a. Get him a inexpensive train of his own, if there is such a thing.

          b. Try using a temporary barrier. Like 1/4" dowels placed in holes in
the layout substrate at say 6" intervals. String 12 Gage insulated wire, with a
single wrap around each dowel, like a highway barrier. (No sharp or hard
surfaces to scratch delicate finishes.) This could be arranged that when no
longer need, it could be removed with little fuss or consequence.

          c. Realizing that his need for speed on the layout is in itself a
temporary condition, with patience and education you could get him to
understand that going slowly can often give greater satisfaction.

Of course the difficult part is not to discourage him in any way.

  John Oglesby
